The Stars & Stripes recently ran an article about Dennis Wise who wanted to divorce his German wife and chose a German lawyer to process the divorce. He became very frustrated with the German lawyer due to the slow pace of the divorce and eventually decided to hire another German lawyer to complete the divorce. The article did not address why Mr. Wise choose to process his divorce in Germany. If someone calls me regarding a German divorce and their spouse has not already filed and served the person calling, I always ask why the person wants a German divorce. Many times the person has been told that they must file in Germany because they were married in Germany. That is not correct. Anyone serving under the SOFA has a residence in the United States and may file in there state of residence. This is true for service members, DA and DoD civilians and contractors who have SOFA status
If a person was (while in the Military) married to a German national, by a German official, does this still apply? Or must the person seek divorce through German courts? Also what are the governing rules for custody in such a case? any help is greatly appreciated

While in Germany my American fiance married a German woman, she later divorced him but he does not have a copy of the paperwork. He is no longer in contact with her, so who does he contact to ask for an official.
